Longest Day Ever

So a new academic year has begun already. As the year organiser said: if we can survive this year, we can survive anything. And my goodness, I just had a longest day of school in my entire life.

I had no breaks at all. It was labs and then lecture straight through all the way till 6 pm. I don’t know how I am going to survive nine more weeks of this timetable but I guess I’ll have to do so… somehow. At least the lessons are more interesting. I have less classes of circuits and electronics and more computer science, which incidentally is my interest.

Just a short rant. I thought I had to immortalise this timetable in a post of sorts.

Leaving. A Second Time

It’s the time of the year again. One year ago, I embarked on a journey to London and spent the next nine months away from home and familiarity (well, maybe not the latter so much).

This time round, I leave with mixed feelings. On the one hand, I can’t bear to leave home and all the friends but I am kind of sick of just bumming around. On the other hand, I do not really enjoy the prospects of trudging through the thick stack of notes and study materials for my second year.

Oh well, c’est la vie.

Colours in Music

A rather random post. I thought of writing something about music that deals with colours. I have three songs to “showcase”.

Coldplay – Yellow

Probably the most famous song of the trio that I am going to write about. This was probably THE song that propelled Coldplay to the top of the charts. A enduring classic even to this day. I’ve been listening to Coldplay a lot recently, probably because of the interest rekindled by their performance at Glastonbury this year. I swear to myself that I must attend Glastonbury in 2013 when it returns and, hopefully, Coldplay will perform as well.

Les Miserables – Red and Black

In my opinion, this is one of the under-looked songs from the musical, other than the obvious crowd favourite “Do you hear the people sing?”. It evokes a sort of nationalism in you when you hear the characters sing about revolution. This version I have embedded above features Nick Jonas singing as Marius, which I don’t think is as good as the original singer from the original Broadway Cast.

Eiffel 65 – Blue

An old song. I just randomly remembered this song when I wanted to write a post about colours. One of my favourite songs when I was in Primary School. Worth a listen after ten years.

Exam Hiatus

The elections are over and it’s time for me to focus on my exams. I am going to blog less for this period of time.

And finally, on 2nd July 2011, I’m going home =)

Is the ‘X’ for person or party?

The Straits Times published an editorial on something I talked about the other time. Good read. Read the rest of this entry »

Roller Coasters

So yesterday, I experienced what you can call the first “proper” roller-coaster ride of my life at Thorpe Park. I actually define “proper” for anything that involves a 360° turn. Something like the Colossus ride you see here:

You can imagine how fearful I was of the trip the day prior. Ironically, that ride you see above turned out to by my favourite ride when I took it twice. The acceleration and rush you feel was awesome but perhaps the vertigo afterwards is not.

So yes, one more thing ticked off from the life-long list of things to do.

Food for Thought

Someone once asked me if I lived to eat or ate to live. I replied the latter. I did not realise the folly in my response only until I have come to London. Indeed, truth be told, I missed the times in Singapore when good food was just an arm’s reach away. The food was good and more importantly, inexpensive.

In London, a good meal can cost up to £10. That’s more than SGD 20, an utterly outrageous sum to spend on food that is potentially not that good. Thus I had to come to terms that I had to prepare my own meals for affordable sustenance. So like a self-fulfilling prophecy, I am now eating to live. While I am not saying that my cooking or my housemate’s cooking are bad, I am just saying that there is generally no feeling of “enjoying food” as we ate.

Just the other day I prepared this plate of “noodles” for lunch. It’s kind of funny actually when you realise that I used “western” ingredients and cooked them in a “Chinese” manner. The “noodle” was actually tagliatelle, a kind of Italian pasta. The fish fingers were not meant for pan-frying. I just added some sweet sauce and some egg and we have something that resembles Char Kway Teow.

Along with this I have made some rather weird east plus west dishes. Imagine boiling chicken in broth made of coke? Cooking pasta with oyster sauce? Woo, I can’t imagine what my mum would say if she saw what I had made. Perhaps I should make it a point to cook for my parents when I go back home. Maybe it will serve to amaze them or… just convince them that I was never destined to be a cook.

I live to eat, or at least I would love to.

Amazon is My Best Friend

Easter break is coming. The tern is coming to an end. Daylight saving time is coming back again. This means that the amount of school work is ever increasing. The deadlines are coming and I don’t see how I can manage to finish them and YET have my fair share of time with the new games that are going to be released! Alas, one must be sacrificed and gaming has to wait!

Believe it or not, I have been staring at Visual Studio and these lines after lines of colour-coded text for days!

I am in need of some retail therapy. But alas, there is no time for that and so I had to settle for some Amazon-therapy, out of necessity and pure frustration from overwork.

And so Amazon has become my best friend. Because my laundry cycle seem to be ever increasing in frequency, I decided to alleviate the limiting factor, which you can see in the purchase of the two unspeakable items.

Oh yes, and while I was at it, I spotted a pair of Onizuka Tiger shoes going at less than £20 and I grabbed it!

And finally, your eyes are not kidding you, I actually bought a copy of Pokémon Black for my DS (which is probably its first ever genuine game). No, I am not kidding you. It’s real. I couldn’t believe myself either. I am 21 going 22 and I actually bought a Pokémon game.

But scepticism aside, the mechanics of the game is surprisingly deep. And I can’t wait to play it when I have the free time.

Now, back to Visual Studio.

Cautionary Tale

The story goes like this. Yesterday, I went to the gym for a workout in the afternoon. After which, I came back aching slightly before I went to UCL for a Vine meeting. I did not have my dinner and along the way back, I started feeling really fatigued, nauseous and giddy. I’m surprised I managed to walk back to my hall.

I decided to take a shower and during the shower, I started feeling breathless and my vision was getting blur. This is almost like deja vu. I have previously experienced this during Sec 2 (when I fainted) and during army (which I almost fainted) and you can guess how freaked out I was. It’s not really nice being knocked out in the showers when no one knows where you are!

So I went back to my bed, shivering non-stop from the “cold”, dove under the blankets and tried to sleep. My whole body ached and my head was splitting apart. And I just realised I might have fever right now.

The cautionary tale is simple: don’t skip your meals!
